This Southern Sweet Potato Pone is a rich, moist, and comforting dessert made with freshly grated sweet potatoes, butter, and warm spices. It has a deliciously caramelized top and a soft, tender center.
Ingredients
- 3 cups grated raw sweet potatoes
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup evaporated milk
- 1½ cups granulated sugar
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp ground nutmeg
- ½ tsp salt
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease a 9-inch baking dish with butter.
Peel and finely grate the sweet potatoes. Place them in a large mixing bowl.
Add the melted butter, evaporated milk, granulated sugar, brown sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract. Stir until everything is well combined.
Add the cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix thoroughly until the spices are evenly distributed.
Pour the sweet potato mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it into an even layer.
Bake for 50–65 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is deeply golden and caramelized.
Allow the sweet potato pone to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. It can be served warm or at room temperature.
